ABOUT THE ARTIST
Laura Nelle Goebel, who lives
in Cullowhee, North Carolina, has been teaching
traditional and contemporary sewing and quiltmaking
techniques for 25 years. She has classes scheduled at
John C. Cambell Folk School in Brasstown and at her
studio in Dillsboro at Squire Watkins Inn. She has been
a member of the Southern Highland Craft Guild since 1980
and has exhibited her quilts, wearable art, and wall
hangings throughout the Southeast. Currently, she is
involved in a "Reading -A-Quilt" project with
the Mountain Heritage Center at Western Carolina
University, which is a visiting program for regional
schools.
This is a series of photos of local
barns interpreted into fabric wall hangings and quilts.
This has been a 1 1/2 year project to bring an awareness
of the vanishing barns in our communities. The project
was partially funded by the Regional Artists Grant
Program and the Jackson County Arts Council.
