ABOUT THE ARTIST
Mary Judernatz epitomizes the
term "late bloomer", since she did not begin
art classes until she was forty years old. Prior to that
she had brief careers as a Dominican nun (during which
time she taught elementary school), a U.S. Air Force
officer and a drafts person.
Ms. Judernatz began doing calligraphy in sixth grade
(lettering for bulletin boards), and has worked numerous
years as a professional calligrapher and calligraphy
instructor. She has studied with internationally known
calligraphers Sheila Waters and Levan Rees.
Her artistic development began with pen and ink work,
some of which finished in the top one hundred in a
national contest sponsored by the "American
Artist" magazine. That resulted in inclusion of her
work with that of the winners in a show at a Denver, CO
gallery.
Work by Ms. Judernatz has appeared in three Southeastern
Spectrum shows in Winston-Salem, NC, and in an
international pastel show sponsored by the Southeastern
Pastel Society. It has also been included in group shows
in Asheville, NC, and Miami, FL.
During the past decade her work in pastel and graphite
has received numerous awards, and in 1995, she had a one-person show at the Fine Arts Center in Tryon, NC.
She is represented by the Summer House Art Gallery,
Highlands, NC; Thomas Jacoby Fine Art in Cashiers, NC;
and Oounkshaw Art Gallery in Young Harris, GA.
Ms. Judernatz has designed 3 notecard lines: one
depicting tropical flowers and orchids; the second
depicting the wildflowers and scenes of the Smoky
Mountains; and the third offering a variety of subjects.
In addition, MS. Judernatz teaches basic drawing twice a
year at John C. Campbell Folk School, Brasstown, NC and
at Southwestern Community College in Franklin, NC.
